Information Technology in Pakistan – A Riview

Domestic Needs for Information Technology
Domestic needs for I.T services for Pakistani local industry are booming day by day. More and more companies requiring ERP,MRP and POS systems for their businesses. So the domestic I.T requirements are increasing more than the foreign I.T exports. Their is a need for a comprehensive ERP solution for local market which can compete Oracle E-business suite and Microsoft GP but unfortunately software giants from Pakistan did nothing in this area. So the foreign vendors like Oracle and Microsoft are grabbing more and more bucks from here than we Pakistanis are getting in this area from USA and Western countries.

Status of I.T Education / Training in Pakistan
Our universities producing tons of garbage each year. That’s the reason why we are way behind in innovation and world class technology consultancy in the field of Information technology. Here in Pakistan we mostly are tool dependent. If we want to leap forward in the field of information technology our universities should start projects for developing new languages, operating systems and databases, research projects for new hardware etc. But so far everyone is sleeping, the situation is so pathetic that every 1000 students of information technology only 10-15 are eligible to be called as I.T professional. As of my example we are technology consultants based in Lahore, we hardly found the exact match for our requirement. Most of the candidates are only in a rush for a short cut.

Software Exports vs Software Imports
As a nation we dream alot, but the ground facts are we are spending more revenue than we earn in the field of Information Technology. Companies like Oracle and Microsoft alone grab million of bucks each year by selling their ERP solutions to our local industry, banks and govt. sector, while our software exports are standing still under 90 Million dollar a year.

Govt. Roll in developing I.T Structure
Unfortunately, each time we elect leaders on the basis of tribe,language and clan. we never think about our country and our nation. Like every field and institution is suffering with poor and corrupt management. Information Technology is also in the list. Each govt. only post a minister for the department to snatch our tex money through kick backs and commissions. They are not concerned with the development of Information technology and its infrastructure.

Things to Do
1- There a big need to change the whole I.T syllabus in our education system
2- Local Giants like Netsol should develop a comprehensive ERP solution for our domestic industry
3- I.T professional should have their own working bodies and organizations
4- I.T departments in Provencal and Federal level should be headed by I.T pro Ministers and Secretaries.
